Natura 2000: Special Protection Areas (SPA)
What this layer shows
Natura 2000 Special Protection Areas for wild birds under the Birds Directive, including the seabird colonies' marine areas (as at the end of 2024, from the European Environment Agency). Protected under the Conservation of Wild Birds Regulations (S.L. 549.42). A plan or project that may significantly affect the birds a site protects needs an appropriate assessment, even when the work is outside the site.

Merestone asks this service live for the area on screen. Nothing is copied or stored beyond a short cache.
This layer is drawn from the European Environment Agency's annual return of what Malta reports, not from a live service of the national body itself. A boundary changed this year appears here when the next return is published.
