What this layer shows

Natura 2000 Special Areas of Conservation under the Habitats Directive, on land and at sea (as at the end of 2024, from the European Environment Agency). In Malta they are protected under the Flora, Fauna and Natural Habitats Protection Regulations (S.L. 549.44). A plan or project that may significantly affect a site, even from outside it, needs an appropriate assessment, which the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) screens. ERA's own list of sites is the current authority.

Where the data comes from

ARCGIS · bio.discomap.eea.europa.eu

Merestone asks this service live for the area on screen. Nothing is copied or stored beyond a short cache.

This layer is drawn from the European Environment Agency's annual return of what Malta reports, not from a live service of the national body itself. A boundary changed this year appears here when the next return is published.
