Areas set aside permanently and without use to develop naturally: North Rhine-Westphalia's contribution to the wilderness target of the national biodiversity strategy. They are secured legally through whichever site ordinance underlies them, or by the state's own forestry commitment.

Protected areas
Every area-based protection at once: Natura 2000, nature and landscape protection areas, national parks, national natural monuments and biosphere reserves with their three zones, plus the nature parks and Ramsar sites the European return leaves out. The nature parks come per state or from the BfN's national register, the Ramsar sites from some states only.
Data search
Where an ecological consultant or a planning office starts: the protected-site network, the small designations (natural monuments and protected landscape components), the biotopes protected by law, the Annex I habitat types with their critical loads, and the species records. The small designations and biotopes are available where that state publishes them openly.
