Zonas Vulnerables a la Contaminación por Nitratos
What this layer shows
The zones vulnerable to nitrate pollution from agricultural sources that Spain has reported to the European Commission (Directive 91/676/EEC), on the mainland, the Balearics and the Canaries, as published by the European Environment Agency, with each zone's designation date. In them farming is subject to mandatory action programmes (Real Decreto 47/2022). The autonomous communities designate and revise them: a revision after the latest report to the EU may not appear here, and the community's designation in force prevails.

Merestone asks this service live for the area on screen. Nothing is copied or stored beyond a short cache.
This layer is drawn from the European Environment Agency's annual return of what Spain reports, not from a live service of the national body itself. A boundary changed this year appears here when the next return is published.

Constraints
The designations consulted first in any environmental study: the Red Natura 2000 (ZEC and ZEPA, the basis of the appropriate assessment) and the national inventory of Espacios Naturales Protegidos, which also covers the Canaries and the Balearics. The starting point for an EIA or an appropriate assessment.
