A rijksbeschermd stads- of dorpsgezicht is an area designated by central government whose historic character is protected. The protection works through into the municipality's omgevingsplan and sets requirements for demolition, new building and alteration of the built fabric, so always consult the omgevingsplan and the aanwijzingsbesluit. The RCE indicates that the position of the boundaries should be treated with caution, because their quality varies.

What a consultant checks first: Natura 2000, National Parks and Ramsar wetlands, the public-law restrictions from the Wkpb register, rijksmonumenten, beschermde stads- en dorpsgezichten and World Heritage, the flood defences with their protection zone from the legger, and the province's water abstraction areas, groundwater protection areas and boringsvrije zones. The gemeentelijke archeologische verwachtingskaart and the municipal heritage register remain authoritative and are not included here.
