The cantons' forest reserves under Art. 20 para. 4 of the Forest Act, brought together for the whole country by the FOEN. In natural forest reserves no forestry work is done, so the forest develops naturally; in special forest reserves targeted work supports particular habitats and species. The reserves are as a rule secured by contract for at least 50 years. The reserve type follows the European MCPFE classification.

The inventories of national importance a project is measured against: BLN, floodplains, raised bogs and fens, mire landscapes, dry grasslands and amphibian breeding sites, with the hunting-ban areas, bird reserves, forest reserves, wildlife rest zones, Emerald and Ramsar sites and Pro Natura's reserves.
