What this layer shows

Natural Heritage Area: Ireland's national designation under the Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000, the nearest equivalent of a British SSSI. Nearly all NHAs designated so far are raised and blanket bogs; the wider network is still Proposed NHAs. Certain activities on NHA land need NPWS consent.

The designations an Irish ecologist checks first: SACs and SPAs (the sites behind Appropriate Assessment screening), Natural Heritage Areas and proposed NHAs, Ramsar sites, statutory Nature Reserves and Refuges for Fauna, National Parks, and ancient & long-established woodland. The opening move of an EcIA or AA screening: what is protected on or near the site.
