The vulnerable zones of the Azores: the catchments of lakes on São Miguel, Pico and Flores, such as Furnas, Sete Cidades or Lagoa Rasa, designated by Portaria n.º 1100/2004 under the Nitrates Directive (91/676/EEC), where farming is subject to action programmes to protect the lakes' water.

The set for working on the islands. ICNF's and APA's national layers cover the mainland only: these are the ones that answer on the islands: Natura 2000 and the national inventory of classified areas, on Madeira, Porto Santo, the Selvagens and the nine islands of the Azores. On Madeira come the regional layers: areas of potentially significant flood risk, sea cliffs, the land cadastre (still partial), the geological map, PDM zoning, landslide and fire susceptibility, coastal risks and the Santana and Porto Santo biosphere reserves. On the Azores, the Regional Government's layers: Ramsar sites, biosphere reserves, flood-risk zones, water-abstraction protection and vulnerable zones.
