The buffer zone of a biosphere reserve: the area where use adapted to the purpose of protection, usually traditional farming, is what maintains the habitats in the first place. It is largely treated as a landscape protection area; the reserve's own ordinance governs. The underlying data is what Germany last reported to the European Environment Agency; the legally binding boundary is the ordinance held by the competent nature conservation authority.

Nationwide, the nature parks excepted.

Where an ecological consultant or a planning office starts: the protected-site network, the small designations, natural monuments and protected landscape components, the biotopes protected by law, the Annex I habitat types with their critical loads, and the species records. The small designations and biotopes are available where that state publishes them openly.
